Human health cannot be separated from ocean health. Our oceans produce half of the earth’s oxygen, stores a quarter of emitted CO2, and over a billion people depend on it as their primary source of protein.
We believe that our under-explored diversity-rich oceans also hold the key to finding new medicines for a host of diseases through bio-pharmaceutical research, drug discovery and biomimetic-inspired medical devices. Today, however, our oceans are under siege by climate change, pollution and overfishing. All three are depleting marine populations, leading to mass extinctions of known and yet-to-be-discovered species.
Our mission is to mitigate these threats by assisting companies in commercializing innovative technologies designed to aid in the conservation of marine environments and the exploration and collection of marine life. Our goal is to preserve the great promise our oceans offer as a treasure trove of pharmaceuticals and natural products to combat illness and improve our quality of life.
While reefs occupy less than 0.1% of the world’s ocean area, they provide a home for at least 25% of all known marine species. Over the last three decades, the world has lost half its coral reefs due to temperature rise and acidification. This loss is changing the distribution of fish stocks and driving many species to extinction.
Overfishing depletes species and can destroy fragile ecosystems. It’s estimated that more than 30% of global fisheries are being exploited at unsustainable levels and another 60% are at max capacity.
Pollution, such as plastics and raw sewage, also kills species through poisoning and oxygen depletion. The loss of marine biodiversity doesn’t just threaten sources of human food, but also can deprive us of potential new medical treatments and cures for a wide variety of diseases.
The ocean covers three quarters of the Earth’s surface and hosts more than 80% of diverse plant and animal species in the world, yet less than 10% of marine species have been discovered & catalogued to date. It is widely believed that our under-explored diversity-rich oceans hold the key to finding medicines for a host of diseases. Many new marine-based drugs have already been discovered that treat some types of cancer, antibiotic resistant staph infections, pain, asthma, and inflammation.
Our goal is to work with companies focused on technologies designed to reduce the time and cost to discover and bring new species of marine animals and plants from the ocean bottom to the lab.
We offer a suite of services designed to meet your company’s particular needs. This can include pre-launch activities ranging from initial product assessment, market research, and customer discovery, to product launch, business development, and exit strategy.
